Doom and Gloom: The Sequel

My agent forwarded me an email from an executive at one of the major studios. He informed her that he had been laid off and listed his new contact information.
 
A conversation with peers uncovered a common fear that producers are not only not buying new material but not even reading. 
 
 
I’ve said it before: “The times, they are a-changin’.”
 
"Come writers and critics
Who prophesize with your pen
And keep your eyes wide
The chance won't come again
And don't speak too soon
For the wheel's still in spin
And there's no tellin' who
That it's namin'
For the loser now
Will be later to win
For the times they are a-changin'"
 
 
But it’s not all bad news.
 
A few producers realize that a way out of this mess may require new talent—and that could be you. 
 
I was in a brief online conversation with a writer/producer/showrunner who had just preached some universal truths on LinkedIn. She acknowledged all of the above but with a caveat. If you want a chance at bat, you will have to work all the more harder. Having an agent and, or manager is only part of it. They have other clients and cannot spend all their time on one career path. You, the artist/writer, will have to take some responsibility and explore other ways to get your name and work out. You are going to have to work your ass off. Even so, there is no guarantee that anybody will buy what you are selling. But I can guarantee you that it will get you a chance in the batter box. What you do there, I leave to you and the fates.
